A little over a year ago we were reporting that Sylvester Stallone was returning as Gabe Walker for a Cliffhanger sequel and today, well, it’s all changed, hasn’t it?
It seems that the sequel is still going ahead but Stallone has walked and will not be involved and it’s no longer set to be directed by Greenland’s Ric Roman Waugh but rather will now be directed by Non-stop’s Jaume Collet-Serra and will see Baby Driver star Lily James step into the leading role with Pierce Brosnan also set to co-star.
Yes! Stallone returning as Gabe Walker for cliffhanger sequel
From Stallone to Lily James? Makes sense to me, what’s your problem?
The new script is based on a story by Ana Lily Amirpour and is described as a father and daughter Die Hard.
Brosnan will play seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s daughter Naomi (James, left), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.
Lars Sylvest of Thank You Pictures, Joe Neurauter of Supernix and Rocket Science’s Thorsten Schumacher will produce with Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe.
Collet-Serra said of the project: “Shooting our movie on location in the Dolomites using large format cameras was imperative for us to show the scope and scale of the story we’re telling. We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience.
“Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb. Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment.”
Interestingly, the franchise – is it a franchise with only one movie in the bag? – any way, was set to have a female lead when it was still set for a straight up reboot back in 2019, so it seems this new movie might be the best (hopefully) of both worlds.
I love James and Collet-Serra is a solid director and, well, Brosnan is the man, so the talent is there but as a sequel to a Stallone vehicle? Only time will tell.
The Variety report has the first image of James from the movie’s filming:
