Well, after years of rumours and false starts, it seems that Space Balls 2, sequel to the 1987 Mel Brook’s Star Wars send-up is finally going ahead with Brooks producing and, em, Josh Gad writing.
Josh Gad? Wut?
Yes, the voice of Olaf and star of such classics as Strays and Pixels, is bringing the Power of the Schwartz back to a whole new generation.
The original movie starred Bill Pullman as Lone Star, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Rick Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet and Brooks as President Skroob and Yogurt and was a satirical look at Star Wars, Aliens and Star Trek and, while more miss than hit, is held in the heart of sci-fi and Brooks fans (we don’t speak about the animated show. At all. Ever) and now Gad is bringing it back.
At Fan Expo in Canada, Gad confirmed his role in the sequel, which he will also reportedly star in, saying that Brooks gave him the keys to the franchise, telling him: “Josh, you’ve got your finger on the pulse.”
Strays director Josh Greenbaum is expected to helm the movie from the screenplay written by Gad along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
We’ll keep you posted as development steps into gear…
