Kevin Feige addresses Zendaya’s character in Spider-man: Homecoming…

July 10th, 2017 by Marc Comments

After months of speculation about just who Zendaya was playing in Spider-man: Homecoming, we all found out in the last few days that she WAS Michelle, not Mary Jane Watson.

However, just as the movie was winding down, she told Peter Parker that her friends call her ‘MJ’. And everyone was left thinking… ’em, what?!’

See, in the comics Mary Jane, AKA MJ, is the true love interest of Peter Parker and the future Mrs Parker. However, Zendaya’s character, despite the weird comment at the end, is clearly not the comics’ MJ.

So what gives?!

Well, Marvel movie boss Kevin Feige has addressed this: “She’s not Mary Jane Watson, that’s not who the character is,” Feige said.

“But giving her the initials that remind you of that dynamic certainly is intriguing about what could go forward.

“Clearly, she says she’s not obsessed with him [Peter Parker] she’s just observant. But she’s there. And to have fun with that while at the same time having it be different characters that can provide a different dynamic [is the point].”

Going further, Feige added: “Peter’s had a lot of friends over the years in the comics, and a lot of schoolmates and characters he’s interacted with. It wasn’t just Mary Jane Watson; it wasn’t just Gwen Stacy; it wasn’t just Harry Osborn. So we were very interested in the other characters, and that’s where Liz came from and that’s where the version of the character Michelle came from.”

Em, what? Ok, so Peter has had loads of friends and acquaintances? Yeah, we can buy that no problem, but the MJ comment just felt really tacked on.

Still… we’re not complaining; we’re still looking forward to seeing what comes next.
