Kevin Smith reveals Clerks III will be colour and black and white, harkening back to what has gone before

August 9th, 2021 by Marc Comments

We learned last month that writer/director Kevin Smith is returning to the Quickstop to finish his Clerks trilogy (here) which would see our intrepid anti-heroes Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) and Randall Graves (Jeff Anderson) decide to make a movie based on their lives after Randall has a heart attack, echoing Smith himself’s recent heart issues.

Now Smith, who always likes to chat, has been spilling some fun details about Clerks III that sounds like it could be a lot of fun and a great way to throw back to what has gone before.

Fans will know that the first movie in 1996 was made for a shoestring budget – Smith maxed out his cards, went on medical trials, etc to make it – and was black and white not, as Smith has said before, for the arthouse look but because it’s all they could afford. By the time he returned for Clerks II in 2006, he had a few movies under his belt and was allowed a budget to get the colour in there… although I’d argue the black and white suits the world better.

Now Smith has revealed that Clerks III will be a clever mix of both colour and black and white and not monthly that, but it makes sense why!

On the latest episode of Fatman Beyond Smith says:  “It’s both [black and white and color].

“The premise of the movie, of course, is that they make a movie, so the movie they make is in black and white. The movie’s in color, but [it’s black and white] when they shoot their version of Clerks – which is called Inconvenience. That was the original title for Clerks.

“The black and white movie they’re making is called Inconvenience, that’s their version of Clerks. There’s a lot of us replicating the scenes that you know insanely well from Clerks, and the beautiful thing is they’re replicated with all the same people, and we’re all so f**king old.”

In Clerks III, following a massive heart attack, Randal enlists Dante, Elias, Jay and Silent Bob to make a movie immortalizing his life at the convenience store that started it all.

Previously, Smith had said: “Years ago, Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker – so now it’s time I return the favor.”

The movie will also see Clerks and Clerks II stars Jay Mewes (Jay), Kevin Smith (Silent Bob),  Rosario Dawson (Becky) and Trevor Fehrman (Elias) return.
