Captain Planet has been in talks for a live action remake for a while now. First Sony had the original plans and now it seems Paramount Pictures has taken the helm with a little help from a real –life captain planet: Leonardo DiCaprio.
It’s not surprising that DiCaprio, as an avid and passionate environmentalist, is attached to this show. DiCaprio is also set to produce the new film and Scream Queens star Glen Powell and Jono Matt will pen the screenplay, which will be based on the classic animated series. Powell (below) is also set to star in the film.
The original series centred around five characters gifted with special rings that allowed them to control the elements of water, fire, earth, air and heart. In combining these powers the five could summon captain planet to help stop villains and environmental threats.
The films main challenge will be its modernising. It goes without saying that environmental issues are a strange subject in today’s world. It will be difficult for Powell and Matt to gain the audience needed and also retain the same message the original was famous for portraying.
