So, it’s no secret that when George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he also gave them a treatment for how he envisioned the story ending.
It’s also no secret that Disney threw that story treatment out and went in their own direction although, let’s be honest, it’s questionable if the word direction can be applied to the last two saga movies.
However, now via The Star Wars Archives: Episodes I-III 1999-2005 we have some details on what Lucas’ original plan – or some of it at least – was for the closing trilogy.
Lucas was considering having Darth Maul return as the villain after the death of Emperor Palpatine – yes, Lucas killed him off. For good – with Darth Talon (see image above) stepping into the Darth Vader/apprentice role – Talon was a female Lethan Twi’lek Sith Lord covered in Sith tattoos in the comics.
On top of this, Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker was set to rebuild the Jedi Order with Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia becoming Supreme Chancellor – this certainly feels more respectful to Luke and Leia than the direction Disney went.
It’s also interesting that a lot of these ideas – especially Maul’s return – was picked up as plot threads in Clone Wars, Rebels and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
On top of this, I feel confident – though this is speculation – that The Mandalorian will get into Luke’s story pre-sequel trilogy.
Personally, I think this would have been a more satisfactory direction than the mish-mash we got in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. What say you all?
