Marc Webb talks Amazing Spider-man 2, 3 & 4 plus the abundance of villains and what happened to Shailene Woodley’s Mary-Jane?

Fresh from SDCC, Amazing Spider-man 2 director Marc Webb has been talking all things Spidey and what lies ahead for out friendly neighbourhood Spider-man…

Talking to various sites, reporters and fans, Webb has been leaking various bits of info. And, because it’s what we do, here’s the best bits…

Webb promises that, even thought the movie is packed with villains from the Spider-man comics, we aren’t dealing with a Batman & Robin type mess: “One of the things about ‘Spider-Man’ that’s really fun is that the people who become villains often don’t start out as villains. Most of the relationships are based in love in some ways. We’re teasing certain characters that may not be his main foes… but the main villain is going to be Electro.”

About the Rhino: “Rhino sort of makes a teasing appearance in the film in a very calculated and careful way.”

On the third and, yes, fourth movie:  “It’s still too early to talk details. If you pay attention (to Amazing Spider-man 2) you may get a feeling and a sense of what’s to come in the future.

Curiously, just as we fans were, he admits he was surprised by the fourth movie announcement too an hints that there may be a spin-off or in-universe movie coming as opposed to a conventional sequel: “We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film”

The very lovely Shailene Woodley was talking at SDCC about her being trimmed from the movie as Mary-Jane. It seems that, with a story so packed with characters something had to go: “Mary Jane was in four scenes— four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense. They’re introducing so many new characters; it really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”

Here’s the footage of her chatting about it:

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
