Margot Robbie lining up Tank Girl as her next comic book role? UPDATED: A Director has signed on?

September 9th, 2019 by Marc Comments

Bit of ambiguous news breaking today, but it looks like Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie may be lining up comic character Tank Girl for her next project over at MGM.

Tank Girl was created by Alan Martin and writer Jamie Hewlett and was a big part of the comic scene in the 1990s, even getting a movie with Lori Petty in the staring role. It wasn’t very good.

She lives in a post-apocalyptic Australia with her boyfriend Booga, who also happens to be a Kangaroo (don’t ask).

As it happens, Robbie would actually be a pretty good match for Tank Girl… and she’s definitely got the right accent.

Anyway, co-creator Alan Martin put out a tweet saying: “Just heard that Margot Robbie’s company have optioned rights from MGM to make a new Tank Girl movie – now several months into development. We haven’t been contacted by any of the parties involved with the project, so not sure if there will be any input from the original creators.”

Robbie’s company, LuckyChap Entertainment, is also producing the upcoming Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) over a Warners/DC.

UPDATE: Word is the movie has a director: Joris-Peyfrafitte, who directed Robbie in Dreamland is in line to direct The Hunter & The Fox for Annapurna, is currently up for the gig.

Let me know what you think of Robbie as Tank Girl in all the usual ways, meanwhile, here’s the tweet that started it all:

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
