Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin share pic celebrating The Batman 2 script being finished

Well, after all the to-ing and fro-ing, it looks like The Batman 2 script is finally ready to go!

Writers Matt Reeves (also directing) and Mattson Tomlin shared the above image on social media, revealing that the script is done and it’s time to get things prepped as Gotham City is in dire need of its Dark Knight again.

Speaking about the plot for the highly anticipated sequel last September, Reeves had this to say: “[It will] dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie. It expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see”.

“Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that,” he added.

In the time since, there seemed to be some confusion with how close to done the script was with many – including us – pondering on the possibility that DCU head James Gunn was planning on making Reeves’ Batman universe part of the wider DCU, which could be why the script was taking so long, however those rumours were dispelled by Gunn himself several times and it seems he was, indeed, telling the truth.

A couple of weeks back, Gunn said: “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”

He wasn’t far off.

Gunn wasn’t the only one waiting on the script with star Robert Pattinson, Batman himself, saying recently that he had just learned the movie’s storyline: “Matt [Reeves] is a very careful writer, but I finally know what [The Batman 2 is] about.

“It’s very cool, and I’m very excited,” he added.

Someone who never doubted, however, is Andy Serkis, who plays Batman/Bruce Wayne’s ever present guiding light and aide, Alfred Pennyworth: “I’m absolutely certain you’ll see The Batman 2, I know that the script is being finished at the moment.”

On the script’s delay, Serkis went on: “Matt Reeves is a formidable and wonderful filmmaker, and he would not want it to go forward until, in his mind, the script is where he needs it to be.”

The DCU’s future movies, TV shows and games broken down

With The Penguin, The Batman’s first spinoff (not counting the excellent Riddler comic series), showrunner Lauren LeFranc saying recently that other Batman spinoffs are being developed, it’s a good bet that there will be more expansions to this version of Gotham before Pattinson’s Batman swings onto the big screen again.

Thoughts, I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.

The Batman Part 2 is expected to begin filming later this year and releases on October 1st, 2027.
