Has the movie and TV adaptation of Stephen King’s masterful The Dark Tower found its Roland of Gilead? Or maybe that’s Randall Flagg…
According to The Wrap Matthew McConaughey is in talks to star in Sony Pictures and MRC’s adaptation of King’s massive story of a lone Gunslinger on a mission to save the whole of reality which lies in The Dark Tower, the centre of reality, which is beginning to crumble under the reign of the Crimson King. It’s one of the biggest stories ever told (deal with it, Lord of the Rings fans) and now it seems that McConaughey is set to play the Gunslinger himself. This would be a great piece of casting although Russell Crowe of Viggo Mortensen are closer to King’s original vision of Roland.
However…
THR are reporting that the actor is in talks, not for Roland, but for Randall Flagg, one of the main villains of the story. This makes more sense because McConaughey has been in the rumour mill for THAT role for over a year now (here)
The first movie, presumably entitiled The Gunslinger, will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel, co-writer of the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and director of A Royal Affair. There will also be a TV series running alongside the movie(s), Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) wrote the screenplay.
The journey to The Dark Tower begins on January 13, 2017.
