Ok, look, even I, who has been asking for this ever since 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4, have to admit, it’s time to let this go.
Mel Gibson has been talking about the long-planned Lethal Weapon 5 and seems optimistic that it could still happen.
Look, Mel Gibson is 70; he’s a great 70, but he’s still 70. Danny Glover is 80 and announced last year that he’s struggling with Alzheimer’s. Honestly, let this go, Riggs and Murtaugh, I love you both so much, but that day is done.
Anyway, what is ol’ Mel saying? Well…
Lethal Weapon 5 now in doubt, according to disappointing update
At Fan Expo Boston, Gibson discussed how a fifth movie was planned until series director Richard Donner died at the age of 91 in July 2021 and Gibson announced he would step up to direct.
Now, with Warner Bros on the verge of merging with Paramount, Gibson believes that this might open the fifth movie up to being made again: “That’s what we were thinking in the room, and I think that the fifth script is better than all of the others,” Gibson said. “But it’s tied up in some kind of industrial film hell that you can’t extract it from to make it.”
On what happened the planned movie and waht might come next, the star says: “Richard Wenk and I finished the script, and we were going to go into production, but it just never got the wheels under it. I think [Warner Bros] got into some quicksand at that time. So it got buried somewhere.

“Now I think this David Ellison guy over at Paramount has absorbed or will absorb Warners, or it looks like he will. And maybe, maybe they’ll take the chains off that one, and you might see that in another year or so.”
Gibson says the fifth movie would largely forgo the big explosions and action scenes and focus more on the characters of Riggs and Murtaugh, with one of them actually being retired – if you know the movies, you’ll know who. The movie, he said, is “story all on its own”.
Could this still happen? Well, yes. As I said earlier in this article, Glover is suffering with (from?) Alzheimer’s but he’s still able to get around and attend public events, so it’s certainly not impossible that he could appear once more and, as we know, Gibson is 70, but he’s in fantastic shape for a man of his age, so a less physical but still physical role is definitely possible.
I dunno about this though…
