With Mortal Kombat 2 now set to kick off the 2026 summer season, it seems that the pushed back date isn’t anything to worry about, it seems, as plans are already in place for a third movie and possibly even standalone character movies.
In a new interview, franchise producer, Todd Garner, has assured fans that they’re doing their absolute best to give fans what they want and are listening to fan reactions at early screenings, and it seems it’s working, as reportedly those screenings are going down exceptionally well: “However this movie is received by the public in mass, we’ll make adjustments and we’ll take that feedback… that’s what’s great about this. We can interact with each other and we’re listening and we’re gonna take that feedback in.”
He goes on to explain that they’re determined to make fans happy because the Mortal Kombat universe is a massive one and they want to give the fans all the characters, plots and gory deaths they love: “We’re hoping that this is not the end of the franchise. So, this is not like we’re just doing this movie and this is going to be it, hopefully.”

“We have a plan further down the line for things… as we go forward, nothing is set in stone… if we’re allowed to do further movies, hopefully this one does well enough, there’s chances to do other things, spinoffs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters and evolve the characters that we already have.”
UPDATE MK3 Officially Happening!
At New York Comic Con, Mortal Kombat II writer Jeremy Slater confirmed that work has started on the third movie:

The first movie was a flawed, but unexpectedly fun adventure and the second one, particularly with the addition of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, looks like it’s going to build out the universe in the best way poosible… through passion for the property and a desire to actually do it right.
Yup, I’m actually looking forward to what comes next in the MK universe and then what comes after.
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all.
