Did you enjoy Mortal Kombat? If, like us, you’re keen to see where the story goes next, then it looks like there is a plan in place for the story and how it will unfold over a trilogy of movies.
Now, we reported a few days ago that Sub Zero star Joe Taslim said he’s signed on for four more movies (here) but now writer Greg Russo has revealed that, at the minute, the story is planned as a trilogy – although the actors have probably signed on for more than planned so they can be retained or, what I hope, perhaps a Sub Zero movie is planned… could you imagine him going up against Scorpion in their own standalone?
Anyway… back to Russo.
The writer previously said that they didn’t go straight into the tournament for several reasons, but one was because they didn’t want to end up basically remaining the 1995 MK movie.

But now he goes into the other reasons… the movie is planned as the start of a bigger, over-arching story.
“I always saw [the first movie] as pre-tournament, then [the second movie is] hopefully the tournament, then [the third is] post-tournament. So the idea was that this was going to be a pre-tournament movie that would hopefully sow the seeds for the tournament, the final.”
Given the set-up in the first movie – no spoilers – it wouldn’t surprise me if, after the tournament, we saw a war come to earth… and that could be very cool, indeed.
With the movie doing well in cinemas in the US, a sequel – or sequels – is not looking impossible at all at this stage, which is what Russo really wants has he really wants to explore the worlds of MK and bring in other iconic characters… like Johnny Cage, who is teased at the end of the first movie, saying: “Yeah, hopefully we can tell more of those stories.”
As I said in my review, the movie is far from a flawless victory, but it is highly enjoyable and, as a novice to the lore of the franchise, but the end, I was giddy for a next chapter.
What about you? Have you seen it yet? What did you think of the planned trilogy? Let me know all your thoughts, folks.
