After three movies – five if you include the two additional mockumentaries about the original foot footage classic – the Blair Witch is set to return once again, and this time she’s bringing some of the original talent with her.
In 1999, the world went mad for a micro-budget horror movie called The Blair Witch Project, which saw three young filmmakers head into the woods in Burketsville to find the legendary Blair Witch; after then went missing, and their footage was found and released to the public, seemingly revealing that they found what they were looking for… or rather it found them.
It was massive for several reasons. Firstly, in a year when we were all waiting for Star Wars Episode I, The Mummy, and The Matrix, the little movie became the summer’s hot ticket, and on top of that, many people thought it was real. But even after that passed, what was left was a thrilling little horror movie that felt real – the cast really stayed in the woods and were terrorised at night by the crew, resulting in a movie that exudes fear and terror – and was full of so much lore that fans could really get their teeth into the world they existed in.
Two sequels followed, but both were disappointing.
Now, it seems that original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C Williams, along with original creators Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale are all back for a new Blair Witch movie, this time as producers, with Transfigure and Home Movies director Dylan Clark. The movie will be produced by Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum.
While nothing is known about the plot, words like ‘new imagining’ and ‘reboot’ are being thrown around, but it’s unknown if this is a new take on the lore or if it’ll exist in the world of the other movies.
ABC renew Scrubs for a second (em, eleventh, actually) season!
Missing from the new movie is the face of the first movie, actress Heather Donahue. The original cast has had a bumpy history with the franchise after 1999, with legal proceedings taking place over the fact that they earned next to nothing on a multi-million dollar franchise which has used their likenesses in the years in between in the sequels, games and more.
I love the lore of the first movie, and I admire what the sequels tried to do, expanding that universe, but I really hope the new movie builds on that and gives the original creators the credit they deserve.
So, another trip to Burketsville? Thoughts? I know you have them, and I wanna hear ’em all.
