After the reveal last week (here) that Todd Phillips was working on a Joker sequel, called Folie à Deux, or a ‘rare delusional disorder shared by 2 or more people with close emotional ties’, we’ve been wondering who would be sharing the delusion.
Would it be Batman perhaps? Or Joker’s lover, Harley Quinn?
Well, now we know.
Yes, Lady Gaga has entered talks to star as Harleen Quinzel, AKA Harley Quinn, opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, AKA Joker, although word is that Phoenix has not signed on yet, despite Phillips’ original post having the star reading the script, left.
While nothing has been revealed about this version of Quinn yet – the first movie portrayed a very lose version of who Joker is, compared to his comic book origins – it is believed she will he a doctor at Arkham where Joker is incarcerated, who falls in love with him and helps him escape and become the queen to his king of crime.
It must be stressed that this is not the same Harley Quinn as portrayed by Margot Robbie in the main DCEU movies in the same way that Phoenix was not the same Joker as played by Jared Leto.
Adding to this news, it seems that this time out, Joker will find himself in a musical.
This is very interesting because, as we all know, Joker borrowed from the movies of Martin Scorsese, in particular 1982’s King of Comedy; if this is a musical, might we assume it will borrow from Scorsese’s 1977 classic New York, New York starring Lisa Minnelli, below? Hmmmmmmm…
Anyways, I think Gaga, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, could be a superb choice of Quinn, especially in this new version of the DC universe and it being a musical would be a great change and a bold movie for a comic book movie.
It also has us wondering if perhaps Phillips’ dark DC universe of movies may be one step closer to becoming a reality. There’s a lot of characters in Batman’s Rogues Gallery alone we’d love to see get the realistic, gritty treatment… imagine Scarecrow, Man-Bat or Two-Face in this world? I shudder to think.
Anyway, Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn… let me know your thoughts, guys.
