Neill Blomkamp Alien movie not happening after all

January 13th, 2018 by Dave Bowling Comments

Well, it seems that District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp definitely won’t be getting his planned venture into Xenomorph territory.

With Fox focusing on Ridley Scott’s prequel series, we pretty much guessed that the South African director’s hoped-for alternate follow up to the first two movies, which would pretend like Alien³, Alien Resurrection and the Alien vs Predator movies never happened, won’t itself happen. While this has been a prevailing thought ever since Scott began pre-production on Alien Covenant, Blomkamp continued to push his vision for “Alien 5” and even released concept art online. Now, however, it seems like he’s conceded that the project will remain mired in development hell, as this recent Tweet confirms:

It’s a shame, especially considering the somewhat lacklustre reception Prometheus and Covenant have had, both critically and with fans. We’ve reported in the past that the project was likely sunk (see here) but this finally confirms it, and that Blomkamp is moving onto other things. Specifically, the director now seems to be focusing on getting his short film studio project Oats Studios into a higher gear, so sadly the concept art at the top of this page is probably gonna be the only time we see Blomkamp’s Queen Alien in action…

Dave was born at an early age to parents of both sexes. He has been a self-confessed geek for as long as he can remember, having been raised through the 80s on a steady diet of Doctor Who, Star Trek, Red Dwarf and (sigh) Knight Rider. Throw the usual assortment of Saturday morning cartoons into the mix and we have something quite exceptional: someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of utter tosh; a love of giant robots and spaceships fighting; and the strange desire to leap tall buildings in a single bound while wearing his underpants over his trousers. The death ray is currently in the works and one day you shall all bow to him, his giant space station and fleet of funky orange space shuttles...
