No, the new Matrix is not retconning the previous sequels

September 19th, 2021 by Marc Comments

A new synopsis for The Matrix: Resurrections has raised a few eyebrows as it seems to imply that the only movie that is now canon is the first Matrix.

This would mean that the sequels, Reloaded and Revolutions, are not part of the new movie’s lore.

Here’s the synopsis causing the stir:

The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo & Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind.

Now, obviously, it’s the “continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film” part that has fans thinking this is technically the second Matrix movie.

However, let us put your mind at ease.

This synopsis is just saying that this is the latest part of the story that began in the first movie and nothing more. In fact, if you look closely in the trailer you can actually see, in Neo’s (Keanu Reeves) flashbacks to past events, scenes from the sequels, including Neo with his eyes scarred as happened in the third movie.

So, we just thought we’d put all your minds at ease on this one… this is the fourth movie in the series and continues the story, not reboots it.

Anyways, that’s my thoughts. Let me hear yours, guys.
