Great news tonight if you’re a Deadite fan… and if you’re not, why aren’t you?
In February we learned that Vermin and Mayday director Sébastien Vaniček was co-writing and directing a new, standalone movie in the franchise but star of the original Evil Dead Trilogy and Ash Vs Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell revealed that there was big plans for the Evil Dead universe and now, we have another glimpse into that.
As well as Vaniček’s movie, The Last Stop in Yuma County’s Francis Galluppi has been hired to write and direct another movie featuring the Deadites terrifying and slaughtering… someone?
Bruce Campbell says there’s loads more Evil Dead coming as new spinoff is announced
According to Deadline ‘The project is described as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. No word on a plot or who will be producing, as it’s early days here.’
Back in February, Campbell said of future installments: “We’re going to do them probably more like every two to three years now, rather than every 10 years, but, hey, we’ve seen with Star Wars – you don’t want to wear people out. Keep them guessing! We never wore out our welcome with Evil Dead because we never choked them.”
Outside of the original trilogy, we’ve seen two standalone entries so far with Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead in 2013 ad Ireland’s own Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise last year but it’s worth noting that both movies set up sequels, so it’s not totally out of the question that one of these new movies might just be a follow-on to one of those.
Creator of the series Sam Raimi said of Galluppi’s hiring into the series: “Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence. He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut (The Last Stop In Yuma County).”
I’ve been a big Evil Dead fan since I discovered them at university many, many years ago and I especially love Campbell’s character, Ash Williams, but that said the two standalone movies were very, very good and really brought the series back to its scary, gory roots, so if they can keep that quality up, then I’m all on for a million more Evil Dead adventures.
