War For The Planet of the Apes is the third instalment in the rebooted planet of the apes trilogy that began back in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The new film will feature Andy Serkis returning as the ape Caesar, along with Steve Zahn and Judy Greer, who will be reprising her role as the ape Cornelia.

The film will also feature a new human villain played by Woody Harrelson. At the New York Comic Con on Saturday new details about the film were revealed, including a look at Harrelson’s character Colonel.

Matt Reeves, the director of War For The Planet of the Apes, revealed some of the motives surrounding Harrelson’s character: “we don’t think of any of the antagonists as villains, per say, because you have to understand where they’re coming from in a justified way. The humans are in a desperate place and he is extreme and you find out why he’s so extreme as the story goes on so you have empathy for him, too.”

Little information was revealed as to why Colonel has a thing against Caesar, but it’s likely more information will be revealed soon.

The panel didn’t just focus on the film as Andy Serkis mentioned that a new video game that accompanies the film in some way will also be released around the same time.

There was very little information shared at the panel in New York about this game. Fortunately Serkis did divulge some information about it though: “We created it at the Imaginarium, which is my studio… it’s not like a first-person shooter. It feels like an interactive movie.” said Serkis, “it’s a companion piece, its not based on the characters from this movie”

It’s not the first time Serkis has appeared in video games. He has worked on motion capture and voice work in Heavenly Sword, provided voice work for Risen and Volume, and will feature in the upcoming Star Citizen.

War of the Planet of the Apes will be released on 14th July 2017.
