You may recall a few weeks ago we reported that Blumhouse was bringing us a remake of arguably the most celebrated horror movie of all-time, The Exorcist (here), well it seems we were wrong.
It’s a full trilogy of movies.
It seems that Halloween director David Gordon Green will be directing Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr as the father of a possessed little girl who will seek out Ellen Burstyn – she played Reagan’s mother in the original 1973 Exorcist – marking the first time she has returned to the franchise in almost fifty years.
So yes, it’s a direct sequel and not a reboot/remake of the original movies. So, there’s that at least.
Oh, and the rights to the franchise cost Universal and Peacock $400m, so they’re hoping it’s going to deliver.
The first movie will hit cinemas on October 13th, 2023 with the other two movies following down the line – the NYT reports they may debut on the Peacock streaming service rather than in cinemas.
“There’s no better time to be joining forces with the team at Peacock, reuniting with the great team at Universal and finally getting to work with my friends at Blumhouse, than on this classic franchise,” David Robinson, president of rights holder Morgan Creek, says.
“David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Scott Teems and Peter Sattler have put together a compelling continuation of this iconic tale and I can’t wait to bring this to fans around the world.”
It seems that, like is so fashionable these days, the new trilogy will take place after the 1973 original, and will not acknowledge any of the other sequel already out there.
So, I want to hear those thoughts on this one, guys… I really do.
