Paddington Director Paul King to direct new Willy Wonka Movie?

February 14th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

After bringing his own blend of magic to the most recent and hugely charming Paddington movie, director Paul King is now in talks to direct the newest version of Roald Dahl’s timeless classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Warner Bros are hoping that King will bring his directorial nouse and charm and make Willy Wonka into a hit franchise.

First adapted for the big screen as the musical Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as the eccentric chocolatier and candy-maker who, via promotional golden tickets, invites a eclectic group of kinds to tour his chocolate factory to find his successor. The movie grew to cult status due to its memorable songs, wonderful sets, oompa-loompas and a tour-de-force performance from Mr Wilder.

The story was more recently adapted as a vehicle for Jonny Deep by his long time directorial counterpart Tim Burton with less memorable results.

Unlike the previous versions, Warner Bros have decided to turn Wonka into a franchise including the lesser know sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: an altogether darker and weirder story.

While we are on the subject of Roald Dahl adaptations, rumours abound that Guillermo del Toro is pitching a script to directors for The Witches, a remake of the 1990s film staring Angela Huston.
