For those of you who don’t know, Transformers: The Movie turns 40 this year, and it’s returning to the big screen to traumatise us fans of a certain age all over again.
And it’s going to hurt that much more knowing we’re now living in a world without the great Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime.
However, a little bit of light for this whole ordeal is that Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment have revealed that when the movie, dubbed Transformers: The Movie: The Apology Tour, gets its big-screen return, it will also have a new 12-minute short called Optimus Prime: Awakening attached, marking the last time Cullen voiced the iconic hero.

According to Screen Rant, who broke the story, ‘Optimus Prime: Awakening is described as a fully realized 12-minute cinematic event created as a love letter to the Transformers community and to Cullen’.
And as if that’s not enough, the short will also feature the great Frank Welker as Megatron and Soundwave, Prime’s mortal enemies.
“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other,” Welker says of the short, “After all, one needs the perfect hero against the epitome of evil to create great drama.

“Peter’s portrayal of Prime was born of his own personal beliefs: honesty, loyalty, and always insisting on doing the right thing.
“This made it easy to be friends. Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story opposite Peter’s Optimus in ‘Optimus Prime: Awakenin’ was a real gift. I will miss my friend, but that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime.”
Rest in peace, Peter; you will always be the voice of the brave and the good for us all.
