Ok, look, I don’t think anyone thinks for even a second that we’re going to get a third Independence Day movie but I have to admit, as bad as the second movie was – and it WAS bad – I hate unfinished stories and lore and would very much love to know how that story played out.
But it seems that Director Roland Emmerich, director of both movies, is at least a little bit hopeful that a third movie might happen under Disney.
The first movie was a phenomenon that redefined the modern blockbuster; the 1996 alone apocalypse movie was bombastic, pulse-racing and silly in all the right ways, however, by the time we got Independence Day: Resurgence twenty years later, there was a distinct lack of interest, having had too much time pass and the movie seriously underperformed – although it scored almost $4oom, which is not to be sniffed at – however, a bigger problem was that it wasn’t very good.
And everyone assumed that the series was dead, despite it ending on a massive cliffhanger which seemed to see earth entering an intergalactic fighting force against the invading aliens.
Speaking in 2020, Emmerich seemed to think that there was a chance Disney, who bought the ID4 franchise when they acquired Fox, might want to look into the franchise as it was the kind of thing they loved: “I had naturally talked with Fox about it, and then when they got bought, I kind of said, ‘Well, that’s probably [over.]’ But I don’t know. We’ll see, it’s kind of like it could happen, it could not happen. Hollywood is like a strange, strange place these days, because I have a feeling Disney would maybe be interested in doing it. They like that kind of franchise movie.”
He had said at that stage that he had not gotten around to writing the story once the third movie was dead, however now it seems he has written the story anyway…
In a recent interview, Emmerich was asked about the trilogy closer and replied: “I have a story and everything. Trust me, I have a story,” adding: “I’m ready to go!”
Honestly, given how big a franchise ID4 was, especially back in 1996, it’s not totally out of the question that eventually a third movie or series or something might happen.
What say you all? Do you care about the franchise anymore? Let me know…
