Russo brothers hint they want to work on Secret Wars and Wolverine in the MCU

April 18th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

As we have mentioned before, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after 2019’s Avengers 4 is in a constant state of flux with the studio reluctant to announce anything in case of spoilers for the upcoming Infinity War (one week, UK fans!) but as the Avengers are currently on an international press junket tongues are wagging and lips are loosening during their interviews.

All the way back in 2016, Infinity War director the Russo brothers spoke about how they would love to have a crack at introducing Wolverine to the MCU: now, with Disney in advanced talks to acquire 21st Century Fox in 2019, Hugh Jackman stepping away from the role and the need for Marvel to bring the X-Men into the MCU to freshen up the franchise and to make new movies, it looks like the Russos have figured a way to do all these things.

In a new interview, the Russos discussed their desire to  have access to the X-Men movies’ main character: “It would probably be Wolverine,” says the elder Russo when asked who he wants to work on in the MCU.

Joe Russo adds: “If that Fox deal goes through with Disney there are a lot more characters to work with all of a sudden… It would be interesting to do something like ‘Secret Wars’…”

To add to all this Secret Wars, talk, the Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen has said that she “would love” to do a movie based on the House of M crossover event!

Could this be the way for mutants to be introduced to the MCU? If you reverse the time line of the events and have M-day as something that has already happened as the reason we have not seen mutants yet or use Secret Wars to mash two alternative versions of earths together to introduce mutants or everyone could have had their knowledge of mutants wiped from their memories by Professor X and Thanos’ use of the reality gem breaks his hold on everyone.

The possibilities are endless and I’m sure that the creative minds at the House of Ideas are already working on a story to bring their lost characters (X-Men & The Fantastic 4) back to the fold.

How would you introduce the X-Men to the MCU? Are you hyped for a new Wolverine? Let us know in the comments below.
