Three decades and some change later, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are preparing to suit up once again as those adorable stoners, Jay and Silent Bob.
Yeah, really – although I reported on this back in January last year (here).
With Dogma finally getting a 4K release after Smith finally got the rights back from Miramax, the writer/director/star himself has revealed that he has secured financing for another Jay and Silent Bob movie.
The hapless duo have had a career in movies such as Clerks and Mallrats, while also having their own standalone adventures in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob reboot and this new entry, Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars, will pick up from the end of Clerks III where they had opened their own weed dispensary.
Recasts, returns and religion, Kevin Smith gearing up for Dogma 2
“Believe it or not, man, we still find financing for Jay and Silent Bob pictures, so we’re making a movie called Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars. For those who recall and still follow this closely, in Clerks III, they now run their own dispensary, since weed is legal in New Jersey,” Smith says of the new entry in the Viewaskewniverse.
“Store Wars is basically Spy vs Spy. Another dispensary opens up across the street, and they spend the whole movie fighting and trying to destroy one another. So, it’s a stoner comedy, man, of the highest order, and I’m happy as hell.”
While I am a big, big fan of Smith’s early movies – Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy all had a profound impact on my when I was a college – I have foung his recent movies to be less, well, good, and while I certainly have a soft spot for Jay and Bob, it blow my mind that after all these years, there’s still demand for their standlone movies, something Smith himself seems baffled by: “Me and Mewes have been playing Jay and Silent Bob now for 32 years, and still, we get to do it one more time, and I know how rare that is at this point.
Happy 30th Anniversary! Kevin Smith announces third Jay & Silent Bob movie coming
“Time was, when I entered this business, there was no guarantee that I’d be making Jay and Silent Bob movies 32 years into my career. But as we all know what the business is like today, it’s confounding, to be honest with you, that somebody is still like, ‘You know what? As Hollywood crumbles, and as the industry crumbles, we need one more Jay and Silent Bob movie, just in case that’s what was missing.’ So, I’m here for it, man. I can’t wait to go back. Jason’s ready. He knows how to play that character in his sleep, so if he’s awake, it’s going to be a great movie.”
Smith says they’re at the casting stage now, with the majority of the characters younger than he and Mewes, and as such, there’s no filming or release date, but, as always, I will keep you posted as and when we hear more.
So, the return of Jay and Silent Bob, huh? Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
