It seems that these days if you want a comicbook movie you need a little tease at the end. Well, unless you’re DC.
And the X-Men franchise is no stranger to this idea.
In the latest instalment – X-Men: Apocalypse – we get a teaser that – and I’m not ashamed to admit it – left me confused as to what I had just watched.
It’s ok, you can shout at me later.
Ok, so needless to say, if you haven’t seen the movie, then SPOILERS!
So the scene happens right at the end of the movie credits, so you have a bit of a wait for it, and it sees us return to the Alkali Lake base where William Stryker created Wolverine – the one Logan returns to in X2, remember? The dam and the snow? Yeah, there…
We see three suited men stroll through the remnants of the battle earlier on (men clearing blood and bullets) and go straight to the Weapon X area where we see x-rays of Wolverine’s body and skull. They open a fridge and take out a vial of blood marked simply ‘Weapon X’, which they place in a briefcase alongside other vials (we don’t see where these come from or what they say on them). When the case closes we see the words ‘Essex Corp’ etched on the side of it.
Annddddddd… fade out.
Ok, so this threw me but after asking some of my Marvel uber-fan mates – as well as doing some research of my own – I discovered that this may well be setting up a number of things.
Firstly, the obvious one is that the blood of Wolverine/Weapon X could be used to create another version of him… we know Jackman is stepping down, so we could see his replacement. And, since director Bryan Singer has stated he’d love to have a female Wolverine, we have to think it may well be leading into the creation of X-23 – Laura Kinney: Kinney is a clone of Logan and technically his daughter. She was cloned from his damaged genome and has all of his abilities, including his claws. She was an assassin for ‘The Organisation’ before finding Wolverine and the X-Men and becoming part of X-Force.
So, yeah, it could be setting up X-23 and X-Force.
Another thing it could be leading to is the Gambit movie.
In the comics Gambit once worked for Sinister and helped him recruit bad guys such as Sabretooth. It seems that Gambit had no memory of the events and wanted to keep it that way.
Oh, and he also was a big part of the creation of Nathan Summers who comic fans will know better as Cable. This means he may be tied into Deadpool 2 in which Cable is confirmed returning or X-Force (again) which is the name of Cable’s team of tough as hell mutants.
In the comics Mister Sinister was born Nathaniel Essex in Victorian England and founded the Essex Corporation. He was a big fan of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and, after his son died of a birth defect, he went out of his way to better himself, which he saw as the reason mankind was mutating. He has ties to En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse) who gives him Cyclops and Dark Pheonix to experiment on.
Look, it’s complicated ok? Basically he’s old and powerful and could just be a big villain in the next movie and not a set up for anything… but we doubt that’s what will happen.
Sinister may well be FOX’s trump card in tying together their whole X-Universe.
Now, wouldn’t that be a thing?
