Stallone confirms fourth Expendables to film this October and will focus on Jason Statham’s character

It looks like the fourth movie in The Expendables franchise is set to go in a new direction.

Taking to Instagram, Sylvester Stallone revealed that the next movie will be called The Expendables: A Christmas Story and is filming this October.

The Christmas aspect is almost certainly a nod to Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas character from the series:

This led to speculation that Stallone would not be appearing in the movie but the star, also on Instagram, seems to have confirmed that he will be starring alongside Statham:

However, we have learned that a different member of the team, Hale Ceasar, played by Terry Crews will not be coming back for a fourth outing.

So, there you have it, it seems likely that, moving forward, the franchise will now be led by Statham rather than Stallone and, as a big fan of Statham, I’m not against this but I always think of The Expendables as a Stallone franchise… so it might be a bit weird.

And I’m not the only one who thinks this.

In a recent interview about if he’d do anthor Expendables without Stallone, Arnold Schwartzenegger, who appeared in the second and third movies, said: “There is no ‘Expendables’ without Sly. I would never do the movie without him, no.

“You know, I think the first and second one were terrific. But, the third one, I thought my part was not written well. It was also not playing well in the movie, as far as I was concerned. Maybe other people believed differently. But I didn’t believe that I had any value in the movie. I love the franchise, by the way. I think it’s a spectacular franchise, The Expendables.

“I think that Sly has good ideas, what he wants to do with it, and I think if they write a really good script [in] which my part is very well-developed, I would do it. If not, then I won’t do it.”

I kinda feel the same… but let’s see what the future holds for the gang.

Mind you, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an Expendables movie that didn’t focus on the core team – last heard about in 2018, Stallone has been trying to get a female Expendables movie (The Expendabelles) off the ground for years (here).

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
