It looks like Marvel have finally embraced a long-running fan theory based on Stan Lee’s Marvel movie cameos.
The theory is that Lee, who appears in the majority of Marvel movies, be they Sony, FOX or Disney, in little cameos, is more than just a familiar face… he’s actually a character from the Marvel comics, Utau AKA The Watcher, despite Lee himself denying he is the character a while ago.
The Watcher in the comics is a one of the oldest beings in the Marvel Universe and is part of a race that watches over and observes the universe, recording everything that happens; earth is his domain although he’s forbidden from involving himself in any events.
Also, he looks like this:

Not exactly a striking resemblance to Lee, is it? However, now Marvel movies chief Kevin Feige has commented on the theory and has given it some official standing while speaking at a press conference for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2: “There’s been a great fan theory out there that Stan Lee is actually Uatu in the MCU, who is also known as The Watcher, but in human form,” he said.
He discussed how this theory would connect all the Marvel movies in a multiverse, much like DC are already doing (here). If Lee is the same character in all the movies then he does indeed connect everything.
Feige says that the newest cameo, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, has fun with the theory and pretty much cements its credibility: In the film we see him hanging out on the moon while wearing a retro looking space suit and in the scene he is talking to three other watchers about his adventures.
Lee tells the Watchers about being on earth as a Federal Express Agent.
Could this be a nod to Fantastic Four (below)? Either way, it confirms that, within the Marvel movies, Lee connects it all. And that is pretty cool.
Don’t you think?
