Star Wars Round-up: Hamill still not involved? Gillard not back? First cast member confirmed

November 20th, 2013 by Marc Comments

Did you know there was a new Star Wars movie being made? No? Well there is; Episode VII. And for those of you who are interested, here’s the latest news for the week…

First up, despite all the rumours that Mark Hamill will be returning as Luke Skywalker, it seems it may not be that clear-cut yet according to Next New Movies. Samuel L Jackson, Mace Windu himself, has revealed that Hamill hasn’t spoken to director JJ Abrams. Appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman, Jackson said that Hamill isn’t any the wiser as to wether or not he’ll be in it, despite everything we (think) we know already. Apparently Abrams hasn’t spoken to young Obi-Wan, Ewan McGregor, either… although the young Obi-Wan movie rumours persist. Though Abrams is unlikely to be looking after the spinoff movies anyway…

This is all contrary to the stories of Hamill having been offered the role by producer Kathleen Kennedy and having already started to get in shape… smoke and mirrors, people, smoke and mirrors…

On the other end of the spectrum, we have our first confirmed Star Wars Episode VII cast member… is it Han? Vader? Jabba? Jar-Jar?

Em, no, Lucasfilm has announced that everyone’s favourite Astromech, R2-D2, will be back… the official word came after Bad Robot tweeted the pic below and then confirmed he “will indeed be in the film.” In a ‘how cool is that?!’ note, Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples (below), who are part of the R2-D2 Builders Club, built the droid in the picture and have now been made officially part of the effects team for EpVII. That’s a little bit awesome. Well played, lads. And welcome back R2. Though, no-one is surprised.

And finally, the folks over at theforce.net have spotted a Tweet from Nick Gillard – the man responsible for the awesome lightsaber duels in the prequels – about whether or not he’ll be back for the new movies and, sadly, it’s not good news…

This is sad news as Gillard gave the prequels some of the best duels ever put on film. Hopefully this will be rectified….

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
