It looks like Stephen King’s masterpiece, The Stand, is going to be a much bigger affair than previously thought.

The Wrap are reporting that, in a move never before attempted, the movie will begin not in cinemas but as an eight-part Showtime mini-series setting up the story before it leads into the main movie which is set to be directed by Josh Boone.

We would have to assume that the series will see the deadly virus, Captain Trips, wipe out most of mankind and lead into Boone’s movie which will probably see the final showdown between good take place with Mother Abigail on one side and Randall Flagg on the other.

Interestingly, it seems that Matthew McConaughey is still rumoured to be circling the Flagg role.

I loved the 1994 TV series and am an unashamed Stephen King freak, so this all has me very excited and with IT (hopefully) and The Dark Tower still on the horizon and looking like they’ll be treated properly, it’s a great time to be a King fan.
