Taika Waititi plans to tell a new, fresh story with his Star Wars movie

June 14th, 2022 by Marc Comments

During Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022 we learned that Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit’s Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project will likely be the next to hit cinemas with late next year – back to the Christmas slot, perhaps? – being the aim at the minute (here).

At the time Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said of the future of the franchise that moving away from the Skywalker saga altogether is the future:  “We need to create a whole new saga,” she said.

And, in a new interview about his movie, Waititi seems to have echoed that sentiment.

“Look,” Waititi, left, says, “I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand.

“I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother’. That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”

As someone who has been immersed in the Skywalker saga since 1977, I love the story of the galaxy’s most important family with a passion, I love this idea.

We will always have stories connected to Luke, Vader, Leia and the gang but I think in a galaxy as big as the Star Wars one, there are a million stories to tell – heck, Dark Horse Comics knew it when they had the Star Wars license – and I would love to be heading into the cinema to see a whole new story, lives and adventures in a galaxy that feels familiar and yet, is new too. Wouldn’t you?

And we know it can be done as The Mandalorian, while now connected to the wider universe, started off as a separate story and fans loved it. Same with Rebels, another fan-favourite. And even if you’d rather stay within the confines of that one story thread there will likely always be shows, games, and books – not to mention what went before – for you to love. I just think a breath of fresh air might be just what Star Wars needs.

Any I delusional? Let me know…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
