We all know the Birds of Prey movie is happening in January with casting news expected soon – more on that later tonight – and we all know that Joaquin Phoenix is starring in a standalone The Joker movie (here) but had you forgotten there’s a Joker and Harley movie planned too?
Well, we did, but honestly, we doubted it would ever see light of day, but tonight we have news.
The script has been delivered to DC/Warners by Bad Santa scribes Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and they have talked about what to expect from it, should it get made and, we’ve seen a lot of negativity – and the usual social media toxicity, honestly, peele need to relax! – but we’ve been thinking about what they said and we really dig it.
“It is great,” Ficarra explained, “The whole thing starts with Harley kidnapping Dr Phil. Played by Dr Phil hopefully. Because her and the Joker are having problems with their relationship.
“We had so much fun, I don’t know if we have had more fun writing a script in our career.
“It was sort of like, we wrote ‘Bad Santa’ a couple of years ago, and it was that sensibility mixed with our ‘This Is Us’ sensibility. We kind of meshed them together.
“We were doing a relationship movie but with the sensibility of a ‘Bad Santa,’ f***ed up, mentally deranged people. It was a lot of fun.”
The This Is Us reference isn’t totally out of the blue as the duo directed that show’s pilot and six additional episodes.
But, let’s break down what they are saying her.
Firstly, Bad Santa. Bad Santa is a darkly funny movie full of twisted characters that exist on the fringes of ‘normal’. It’s politically incorrect and totally unapologetic in what it says and how it says it. And did we mention it’s funny?
Next, This Is Us. Joker and Harley – presumably before we met him in Suicide Squad – in the comics had a sweet, dark, unique and, yes, abusive, relationship. Honestly, we can see this working.
A sweet, dark love story full of darkly funny characters who exist on the outsides of society? Please tell us that’s not what Harley and Joker should be.
But will we see it soon?
“I don’t know where it is on the queue of DC movies,” Requa said.
“We handed the script in and everybody loved it,” added Ficarra, “But I don’t know when they are going to do it. Because I know that they want to do ‘Birds Of Prey’ and they want to do Todd’s ‘Joker’ film first. Maybe if ‘Birds Of Prey’ goes well ours will be next.”
Well, the Joker movie is filming and Birds of Prey is starting in January. We’re looking forward to seeing where this goes…
