The impact of cryptocurrencies can be seen from the fact that there are an increasing number of shows and movies being made which are based on this new innovation. Becoming a plot point for popular culture is one of the best ways to gauge just how popular any new development is, and by that yardstick, cryptocurrencies and blockchain seem to be the big new thing that everyone wants to talk about.

There have been a number of shows and movies released in the last few years that have looked at cryptocurrencies, especially in an educational manner, which is important since there are still many people who do not know how cryptocurrencies work, or what the reasons behind their creation are. This is also important in light of the fact that crypto is now being used across various sectors to improve operations and provide solutions. The online gambling sector is an example, where there are various sites that now give players the option to place bets through cryptocurrencies. These sites are also trying to do their bit towards educating players by having a bitcoin gambling blog to give users all the necessary information about cryptocurrencies. Movies and shows are trying to do the same thing – educate viewers about this new innovation which is likely to play a big part in all our lives in the future.

Thus, here are some of the best shows and movies to watch if you want to know more about cryptocurrencies and blockchain –

Banking on Bitcoin (2014)

This is a great movie to learn about the creation of Bitcoin, with a detailed look at some of the early adopters and their stories. One of the biggest cases looked at here is that of Charlie Shrem, who founded Bitinstant, and the allegations that he laundered over $1 million through Silk Road, which was one of the most popular early crypto platforms that then collapsed due to multiple money laundering allegations.

Crypto (2019)

It is interesting that Crypto is not a documentary or an educational movie – rather, it is a traditional crime thriller with cryptocurrencies at its centre. Featuring Kurt Russell, Beau Knapp and Luke Hemsworth, among others, the story follows a young Wall Street banker who is forced to return to his hometown when he tries to uncover money laundering at his bank, and his subsequent discovery of an even bigger nexus back home, which threatens his and his family’s life as well.

Crypto Rush (2020)

This is another documentary on the cryptocurrency phenomenon, directed by Liliana Pertenava, and it does a good job of explaining both cryptocurrencies and blockchain in simple terms, which makes this a must-watch for those with little idea about cryptocurrencies.

Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains and the Future of the Internet (2020)

Award-winning director Torsten Hoffman comes back to the topic of cryptocurrencies after his first documentary, and here he looks at the evolution of blockchain, with the potential it offers as well as the issues and challenges. It is an extremely educational look at blockchain, which has many applications across sectors and so could be crucial to providing solutions for various problems both today and in the future.

Monero Means Money: Cryptocurrency 101, Live from Leipzig

Monero is a fungible cryptocurrency, which is the focus of this film by Justin Ehrenhofer. Dr. Daniel Kim, an expert in this space, provides an overview of Monero, as well as Bitcoin and the implications that cryptocurrencies will have on economies in this documentary.

These are some of the most educational, as well as entertaining movies you will find on the topic of cryptocurrencies and blockchain, and so we recommend that you try and watch most, if not all of these if you have an interest in crypto.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
