Third Mary Poppins movie already being discussed at Disney

January 13th, 2019 by Marc Comments

Just this weekend past I managed to get to see Mary Poppins Returns and, while I must admit I was not high on my ‘must see’ list, I adored it.

It was a real throwback to the movies of yesterday. Of musical, technicolour and, most importantly, magic.

And, it seems – yay! – it’ll not be over 50 years until the world’s most famous nanny returns as director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca have confirmed that Disney is already working on a third movie in the franchise.

According to The Sun (shudder), Marshall said: “It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine. That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know… If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”

Adding to that, producer DeLuca sasy that it seems star Emily Blunt is excited to return to the iconic role: “Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”

While the movie didn’t exactly set the box-office on fire as anticipated, it did have some stiff competition with Bumblebee, Aquaman – which has taken over $1 billion at the global boxoffice – and Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse as far as we nerdy types were concerned, so its  $262 million at the global box office may not be as disheartening as it seems.

We’d be first in line for another adventure with Mary Poppins, that’s for sure.

What say you all?

Mary Poppins Returns is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep).

Mary Poppins Returns is being directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) and sees Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train) leading the cast alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda (Moana), Ben Whishaw (Spectre), Emily Mortimer (Hugo), Julie Walters (Harry Potter), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Pixie Davies (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children), Nathanael Saleh (Game of Thrones), Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote), and newcomer Joel Dawson, with Dick Van Dyke set to make a cameo appearance. It will open on December 21st 2018 in the UK and December 25th 2018 in North America.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
