Three must watch poker movies

December 11th, 2019 by Marc Comments

There’s a reason for why poker is such a popular game, even among those who don’t necessarily gamble.

Online casinos have special sections reserved to those who want to try the thrills of poker and this game comes in many flavors. Playing the game is obviously more exciting than watching professionals at work, but the success of the High Stakes Poker show exceeded expectations.

A bunch of new slot sites 2020 offer free play online poker if you fancy playing some games. Where there’s also a story in the background and amazing actors bringing it into the spotlight, the recipe for success is complete. These three poker movies have made our must-watch list because of the manner in which they portray poker.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale shows the most glamorous facet of poker, which is in fact, quite different from what the game feels like when playing online. It was the first James Bond film where 007 plays poker instead of baccarat and he does it with style. The game is played at high-stakes, but also under tremendous pressure, as the character portrayed by Daniel Craig must outplay Le Chiffre. The criminal mastermind has the perfect poker face and at certain points during the film, he seems to be more than a match for the hero.

Casino Royale had the merit of bringing poker into the conversations of people who were not necessarily avid gamblers. Millions of people have watched the film and some of them found it worthwhile to try their luck and newly acquired skills and poker tables. The release of the James Bond movie coincided with the boom in online poker rooms, so most of the new players chose to gamble over the Internet. This represented an important milestone for the online poker industry who benefited greatly.

Rounders

Matt Damon, Edward Norton and John Malkovich showcased their amazing acting skills in a fantastic poker themed movie called Rounders. The story of a young and talented poker player who takes huge chances by playing underground high-stakes poker was told in a compelling manner. The intensity of its key scenes, as well as the memorable lines told by the protagonists have lingered in the memory of aspiring poker players long after the film has ended. Some of them went a step further and decided to try their hand online, joining the ranks of a burgeoning online poker community

The Gambler

Mark Wahlberg has played in many action-packed movies, but the Gambler is arguably the best poker themed film in which the talented actor starred. It tells the story of Jim Bennett, an English professor who moonlights as a high-stakes gambler, willing to sacrifice everything for a chance to win big. He has the skills, ability and composure to prevail, but quite often he finds himself between a rock and a hard place. This movie highlights the importance of intelligence, proper use of mathematics and composure in the highly competitive world of poker.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
