Tim Allen says Galaxy Quest sequel is still on the cards

January 19th, 2021 by Marc Comments

It’s been no secret for a while now – well, years, actually – that a Galaxy Quest follow-up was on the cards (here’s the history).

It was a movie, then it was a TV series at amazon and then, for the last three years, it’s been pretty quiet, with many believing that the tragic death of the great Alan Rickman was the end of any sequels, spinoffs or TV shows.

But star Tim Allen has always flown the flag for the crew of the Galaxy Quest and he continues to do so now in a new interview, saying it’s on the cards but who knows when – although he says the script is “fabulous”.

“I haven’t reached out to anybody in the last week, but we talk about it all the time,” the Toy Story star says.

“There is constantly a little flicker of a butane torch that we could reboot it with. Without giving too much away, a member of Alan [Rickman]’s Galaxy Quest family could step in and the idea would still work.”

We do know that the original plan for a sequel would have seen Rickman’s character Alexander Dane, AKA Dr Lazarus was to be the centre of the plot, so obviously, the actor’s death meant that wasn’t likely to happen – although it seems Allen is suggesting the character could be swapped out for a someone like his son or brother in the new script: “It’s a fabulous script. But it had a hiccup because the wonderful Alan Rickman passed. So it all got very sad and dark because [the script] was all about [Lazarus] and Taggart,” says Allen – who played Taggart in the first movie.

“It was all about their story. It doesn’t mean they can’t reboot the idea, and the underlying story was hysterical and fun.”

Personally, Galaxy Quest is a movie I seem to enjoy more everytime I watch it and, while I’d very much welcome a return visit to the starship Protector and her crew, the thought of no Rickman just seems too big a hurdle to overcome.

Plus, it could be argued – and I believe it has been – that The Orville has filled the void of sending up Star Trek to the necessary degree and at this stage, 22 years later, Galaxy Quest may struggle to find its audience again.

“[The sequel] could happen now or in five years and it doesn’t matter at all because when you travel at lightspeed when you come back it can be like only 20 minutes, but 20 years have passed, right? That part is wonderful for the sci-fi freak in me. But right now it’s in a holding pattern.”

If we hear more, you’ll be first to know…
