Reports of his life have been greatly exaggerated?
You may recall that back in April (here) Warner Bros boss Mike De Luca, when asked about making a third Beetlejuice movie (among other movies), said it was starting “imminently”? Well, director of both Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, seems to be in the dark about this development.
“Really? Nobody told me. Maybe I’ve been replaced,” he says in a new interview.
Warners bosses confirm more Beetlejuice, Goonies, Gremlins and Matrix movies
Discussing how difficult it was to get last year’s sequel made, Burton seems unconvinced Beetlejuice trilogy is on the cards: “It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105,” he says.
“I know those odds are not good. I really, really enjoyed making this one, and [Warners] didn’t even really want to do it. We did it the same way I did the first one, with the actors doing improv. It was beautiful to see some of the old cast and have Jenna. But it’s like trying to re-create the Wednesday dance scene. I love the characters, but I don’t necessarily see it.”
So, given that Burton is now 66 years old, would he ever be prepared to allow someone else to step in to make the movie? “No. I feel very proprietary about everything I do, even if I don’t own the characters. When they did the [Beetlejuice Broadway musical], I got pissed.”
Star Jenna Ortega, who played Astrid in the second movie, says that if anyone else is directing a third movie, she won’t be returning: “I would never,” she says.
“I also think anybody would be really wrong to get behind that project. Without him involved, what is it? It is what it is because of Tim. There’s no other film you can compare Beetlejuice to. So why would you do that? That would be a tad disrespectful.”

Ok, so, I firmly believe that a third Beetlejuice is on the way and that Burton will be back, heck the name Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice implies as much, but it is odd that Burton seems to be in the dark on the project, although it’s worth noting that in the same interview, and on an unrelated point, he said that he never discusses projects until they’re happening…
What say you all? Will Burton be back for Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice? Let me know…
