Neve Campbell turned down Lara Croft in early 2000s

While she is probably best known as Sidney Prescott in the Scream series, one of our all-time favourite final girls, Neve Campbell also wore the grey vest-top, sunglasses and khaki shorts of one of pop-culture’s other biggest icons.

Yes, it seems that back in 2001, when Angelina Jolie played video game ass-kicker, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, it seems that Campbell was the first choice for the gig but had to turn it down: “I turned down Lara Croft,” the star says in a new interview.

“I was also offered Pearl Harbour. I kicked ass at that audition. I learned Japanese and I got the part… but I couldn’t do it. There’s a lot [I turned down] but you make the choices you make. Certain ones I wasn’t available for as well, because I was so busy. Party Of Five took up ten months of my year for six years. Listen, I’m grateful for everything that I’ve had.”

The role as Julia Salinger in ‘90s teen drama Party Of Five was what put the actress on the map and likely led to her being cast in Scream in 1996, but she has had many roles, including The Craft, Wild Things, Panic, House of Cards, Lincoln Lawyer, and Twisted Metal.

However, one of the oddest roles she was offered was, ironically, on the Scream TV series, which shares the name and basic premise with the movies, but being primarily set in Lakewood, Colorado, and now Woodsboro, California, it’s well established that the TV series is not connected to the movies at all.

Nevertheless, Campbell was offered a cameo in the show’s first season, likely to get audiences interested and linking it to the movies: “I was invited when it was starting, but it didn’t seem to make sense to me. I wasn’t working at the time — I was just being a mom; but also, because I’m a part of the films, for some reason, it didn’t make sense to me.”

She doesn’t go into the finer details… was she meant to be Sidney in the cameo or another unrelated character who happened to look like Sidney? Guess it doesn’t matter but I am curious what the exact thoughts were behind it.

For the record, I think she would have been a great choice for Lara Croft, but she will always be Sidney Prescott(-Evans) to me.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
