Tom Hardy says his Venom very nearly faced Spider-man on screen

Over the course of the Venom movies (2018-2024) it seemed that there was always a hint or rumour that Toms Hardy and Holland as Venom and Spider-man might meet on the big screen, despite being in different cinematic universes – heck, it seemed certain to happen after Hardy appeared in the MCU in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home but alas, it wasn’t to be.

But it almost was.

Agent Venom movie planned now that Tom Hardy is finished with Venom?

“We got close,” Hardy reveals in a new interview: “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”

Hardy revealed some years back that he took the Venom role for his kids, who were fans of the character, but he really wanted to see Venom and Spider-man meet: “As much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”

Back in May 2020 Hardy posted an image on his social media depicting Venom attacking Spider-man and it got the fans buzzing that it was going to happen, but sadly the post was quickly deleted and now I’m wondering if that was around the time things looked like they might come together.

Tom Hardy posts (then deletes) an image of Venom eating Spider-man…

“We poured all of ourselves into it [the Venom trilogy] within the remits of what we were allowed to do with him. And so the enjoyment of the work outweighed the limits of our possibilities with him because we just focused on what we were allowed to do. And we loved doing it.”

It really is a shame that Venom and Spidey never met in the MCU, especially since it was teasingly given to us then taken away but while Hardy may be done with the character, it seems pretty obvious that Venom is now set for the MCU, it’s just a question of who will be under the mask and symbiote.

Meanwhile, at CinemaCon last week, it was revealed that Tom Holland’s next outing as Spidey will be called Spider-Man: Brand New Day and will arrive on July 31st, 2026.

it was also revealed that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-verse will be arriving in cinemas on June 4th, 2027.
