Wait, is Rey Luke Skywalker’s daughter?!

Ok, so we know there’s been much speculation about just who Rey is and who her parents are… it’s been a long-running thing ever since The Force Awakens was released.

But this Celebration a few things happened. This is all speculation, of course.

Firstly, at The Last Jedi panel Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker (like you didn’t know), jokingly referred to Rey as ‘my dau… sorry, my student’. Now we know he was just playing to the audience but in an interview Daisy Ridley, Rey herself, addressed Luke and her’s first meeting:

(Continues after tweet)

“Rey is not a teacher. Yoda and Obi-Wan are very much guiding figures in Luke’s life. Obviously [Luke] doesn’t know who she is when she turns up, like with this freakin’ light saber he hasn’t seen in however long, so that in itself is a big difference. And then as things go on, I think there’s an expectation… there’s always been an expectation on Luke as in his potential, what he can do, and what he should do, much like with Rey. So in that sense they’re kind of similar, but obviously the dynamic has changed because she’s expecting something from him this time. It remains to be seen how he reacts to that.”

Luke doesn’t know who Rey is? Why should he have any idea who she is… does she mean he doesn’t know she’s a Jedi or that he doesn’t know what relation she might have to him?

Director Rian Johnson said Rey’s parentage will ‘absolutely be addressed’ in The Last Jedi.

Finally, although not strictly Celebration news, it’s certainly related; actor/writer/director and uber Star Wars fan Kevin Smith – who was on set during the filming of The Force Awakens – posted his reaction video to The Last Jedi teaser trailer and clearly says that Luke is Rey’s dad. You can watch the very NSFW video below, but as someone who has a lot of insider news on these movies, does he know something the rest of us don’t or was it just a silly mistake? You decide….

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
