Warners talking to actresses for Black Canary, Huntress and Montoya in Birds of Prey movie

September 22nd, 2018 by Marc Comments

DC/Warner’s Birds of Prey movie is currently casting with the idea being that it will film in January 2019 and we may have an idea who they are talking to for the roles of Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya.

We know the movie is to star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn once more, but we also know the movie will feature three other badass DC women:

Black Canary: an expert fighter known for her “canary cry” – a deafening scream that incapacitates most enemies.

Huntress: Depending on which version of the character they go with, Huntress could be a villain, anti-hero or hero. We’ll have to wait and see.

Renee Montoya: Montoya is a lesbian police office on the GCPD who works closely with Harvey Bullock and Commissioner Gordon.

So who are the talking to for the roles?

For Black Canary we have A Wrinkle in Time’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lovecraft Country’s Jurnee Smolett-Bell and Hidden Figures’Janelle Monae:

Black Canary candidates: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jurnee Smolett-Bell and Janelle Monae

For Huntress, The Leftovers’ Margaret Qualley, 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Black Mirror’s Cristin Milioti:

Huntress potentials: Margaret Qualley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cristin Milioti

And finally for Renee Montoya we’re hearing The Purge: Anarchy’s Justina Machado and I Love Dick’s Roberta Colindrez.

The last character in the movie will be Cassandra Cain, a mute assassin who has been Batgirl at one time. Word is they are looking to cast a 12-year-old Asian actress for the role.

Given Cain’s presence and Montoya’s connection to Commissioner Gordon, we’re wondering if we’ll see Barbera Gordon appear… possibly not as Batgirl but as Oracle? And if so, that means Joker has already crippled her in the movie universe. That would be a major development for this universe and one we’d love to see.

Casting is expected to be announced in the next two weeks with others also likely attached to the various roles and the movie will be directed by Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan.

We have our favourites from the lists above… but let’s hear yours.
