WATCH: Barry Keoghan asked about returning as Joker… his response is telling

September 14th, 2024 by Marc Comments

With Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe back in the headlines with the HBO series The Penguin set to air in a few days and The Batman 2 gearing up for filming, we’re all wondering what will happen with Irish actor Barry Keoghan’s Joker, seen all too briefly in The Batman?

Will he come back? Well, luckily, the young actor was asked just that in a new interview, below, he replies: “You know I can’t say much…we’ll see where that goes, again, an incredible experience…”

Now, while his words give very little away, it’s clear from his body language that he really wants to tell us something… has he talked to Reeve about returning? Could he appear in The Penguin? Is there a bigger role waiting in The Batman 2? Whatever it is, I’m prepared to put money on it that he knows more than he’s saying here.

Keoghan’s Joker, when we meet him in The Batman, has already been put in Arkham by Robert Pattinson’s Batman and, although only seen in glimpses, it’s clear his horrific look is unlike any Joker we’ve seen before.

On the new, horrific look, Reeves said: “He has a congenital disease where he can’t stop smiling and it’s horrific.

“What if this guy from birth had this disease and he was cursed? He had this smile that people stared at that was grotesque and terrifying. Even as a child, people looked at him with horror, and his response was to say, ‘Okay, so a joke was played on me,’ and this was his nihilistic take on the world.”

The Joker has more to do in the future of The Batman franchise and while he’s probably been done more than any comic book villain, I can’t wait to see what an Irish Joker has to offer alongside an Irish Penguin (but no Irish Ra’s Al Ghul, sadly).

What about you all?
