WATCH: Does Fast X video imply that Fast & Furious is set for time-travel storyline?

May 22nd, 2022 by Marc Comments

We’ve known for a while that Jason Momoa, Aquaman himself, is set to star, reportedly as the villain, in the upcoming Fast X, the tenth Fast & Furious movie (here).

And while we don’t know anything else at this stage, we know that a few days ago, Vin Diesel shared a clip online of himself and Momoa onset of the movie and having fun.

Here’s the clip:

Now, while the clip doesn’t reveal much, there’s something that it does seem to reveal that has us wondering if the series is set to go really sci-fi heavy before it ends.

If you look behind the stars, you’ll see a broken concrete divider that seems to be on a bridge… a bridge that looks very, very like the one from Fast Five. You’ll also see black vehicles very similar to those used by Joaquim de Almeida’s villain Reyes in that movie.

Now, before we go any further, I’d like to say that I believe the plot will reveal that Momoa’s villain was there during the events of that movie’s climax and something happened to make him the villain, after all, that scene saw a lot of destruction and I can see him having lost his family or wife or something along those lines, making him the villain in this movie, wanting revenge on Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and team.  It could be an interesting way of exploring how the franchise’s events so far have left a lot of innocent, dead people in its wake and maybe the good guys need to hold some responsibility for this.

That, to me, is possibly what we see here.

But, let’s go down another avenue with it.

Last year a few reports stated that Diesel wanted the series to explore… wait for it… time-travel.

What? Well, it’s not THAT far-fetched, given where the series has gone over the last few years.

2019’s Hobbs and Shaw saw Idris Elba playing an unstoppable cyborg created by a shadowy organisation. Last year’s Fast & Furious 9 saw the team go into space. And, while I talked about this to my son, tongue firmly in cheek, he said that Kurt Russell’s Mr Nobody works for a highly secretive shadow government organisation and all they have to do is say they’re working on a time travel project and want Dom and the team to use it for a secret mission or to change something in the past… on top of this, we’ve just learned that Scott Eastwood is back as Mr Nobody Jnr, so the organisation is part of this story.

Also, given that in recent news Tyrese Gibson has said he’d love to see the Fast movie crossover with Transformers (here) and then briefly it seemed a Jurassic Park crossover wasn’t out of the question (here), we’d say that nothing is off the table.

That said, I really don’t think that Fast X will feature time-travel but I do think, like in Fast & Furious 9, we may see events from the past reviewed and revisited.

Look, I love this franchise and, no matter what they do, I just need it to be fun and silly but it also needs to stay somewhat true to the madness that went before.

Thoughts? Let me hear them, folks…
