For those who don’t know, yesterday was the ninth anniversary of Fede Alvarez’s reboot/reimaging/sequel to The Eveil Dead, also called The Evil Dead which wasn’t just much better than it has any right to be but was actually pretty damned great.
Scary and exhilarating, Alvarez managed to capture the tone and terror of Sam Raimi’s iconic 1981 horror movie and introduced us to a new anti-hero in the form of Jane Levy’s Mia, stepping up to take the reigns from Bruce Campbell’s Ash.
It was a movie that we’ve have been hoping for nine years would get a sequel and Alvarez believed in 2018 that is was likely to happen, saying: “Making my Evil Dead was an amazing experience, it was my first film. So, going back at some point will be a possibility. I mean, I’m really good friends with all those guys, with Bruce, and [director] Sam [Raimi], and [producer] Rob [Tapert]. So, we always chat about it.”
However, with Campbell now stepping down – the reboot set him up for a sequel appearance – and a new reboot/sequel/reimaging called Evil Dead Rise coming soon (here), it’s looking less and less likely that we will ever see what becomes of Mia after her ordeal in the cabin in the woods.
But, one thing we do know is that she did survive and was looking like she was set for more action in the world of the Deadites.
But it seems Alvarez has other plans originally.
Taking to Twitter, Alvarez posted the original ending for the movie, which saw Mia stumble from the cabin only to be consumed by the evil that lives (?) in the woods, an evil that Alvarez called ‘the force’. Alvarez writes: “Sam Raimi (wisely) pointed out “after everything she’s been through, she deserves to live”.”
Perhaps Raimi was thinking about a potential sequel or perhaps he really believed she should live, ether way, it’s what we got as Alvarez went back to the script and wrote a happier (?) ending.
Here’s the movie’s original ending:
Here it is. This is what was written originally. But Sam Raimi (wisely) pointed out “after everything she’s been through, she deserves to live” so I rewrote it to the actual ending. (@jcolburnlevy let out one of her best screams in the movie on this take) #EvilDead9years pic.twitter.com/q0PFWCT7Pw

Alvarez went on to share the original script page which was even worse than the unused ending as it ended with Mia, em, exploding. You can read that page at the bottom of the article.
It’s always fun to see things like this and how movies can change during the process of being made and, as a fan of film in general but the Evil Dead franchise as a whole, I love this… I just hope someday we can see Alvarez and Mia return to the screen.
Anyway, what do you all think? Let me know, guys.
