Holy heck, it’s here at last… ladies and gentlemen, here’s your first look at Batman’s suit from Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman movie with Robert Pattinson in the cape and cowl.
And on top of all that, is this our first snippet from Michael Giacchino’s score? Because it’s great!
Ok, so a few thinks.
Firstly, check out the footage below, posted by Reeves himself, and them we’ll talk about a few things that jump out at us.
The Batman – Camera Test from Matt Reeves on Vimeo.
Ok, so the cowl clearly has a hand stitched look and the chest and shoulders have a very modular look which seems to be inspired by Batman’s armour in the Arkham games. The hand-stitched look would suggest that the suit was, as we know, made by Bruce Wayne himself. The modular approach will also give Pattinson plenty of movement too.
And I love the high collar look – this always reminds me of the suit worn in the Elseworlds tale, Gotham By Gaslight and has always been something I wish was incorporated into the suit more.
But one thing that really grabbed my attention was this:
To me, that clearly looks like the batsymbol is made from pieces of a gun… could this be the gun that Joe Chill used to murder Bruce Wayne’s parents? A permanent reminder when he goes out at night why he is there?
This is actually part of the character’s lore as introduced in the story “Manufacture for Use” in Detective Comics #1000 by Kevin Smith and Jim Lee which say Bruce managing to buy the gun from a pawn shop in Gotham and melting it down to wear beneath the chest plate of his costume:
I love this idea!
Someone has removed the red tint on the video to give you a better look at the suit:
