WATCH: Zach Cregger talks survival horror and vision for his Resident Evil movie

May 23rd, 2026 by Marc Comments

One of my favourite movies of the last 12 months was Weapons, and I’m pretty damned excited to know that the director of that movie, Zach Creggar, is bringing us a new vision for Resident Evil later this year.

That’s a clever way to have the Umbrella logo in your poster, above, by the way.

While the majority of the Resident Evil movies to date have focused more on the action of the story, the shooting and the explosions, with the horror taking a back seat, Creggar, in a new featurette, below, talks about how his take on the movie focuses on an “overwhelming feeling of dread” where you have to walk down a dark passageway, knowing there could be something waiting for you.

“I had this idea for a story in the world of Resident Evil, but it’s kind of like me, like if I was dropped into a Resident Evil game.

“I’m terrible with guns, I wouldn’t know how any of them work, I would miss 99% of my shots.”

“I loved the games, I played the games, I don’t know how many thousands of hours, but too many. This is an opportunity for me to be loyal to the games in spirit and in tone, and build a story that just puts you in that scenario again, and again, and again with increasing stakes.”

From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise.

In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.

Directed by: Zach Cregger

Starring: Austin Abrams Zach Cherry Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser

Resident Evil hits theatres September 18th, 2026.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
