What?! Rick Moranis is revisiting Spaceballs villain Dark Helmet!

May 9th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

I miss Rick Moranis, I mean, I really miss Rick Moranis.

He was such a big part of my childhood: Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Little Shop Of Horrors, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Honey, I Blew up the Baby, My Blue Heaven, Parenthood, that weird Gravedale High cartoon series and, of course, Spaceballs.

Moranis was a proper, yet unconventional, Hollywood leading man; his name on a movie meant money, then due to family issues he basically retired from public life, keeps a low profile and raises his kids while very occasionally popping up for projects that tickles his fancy… and soon he will be popping to 1980s Jenkintown to reprise his role as Dark Helmet from Spaceballs (above) in The Goldbergs.

According to USA Today, Moranis will lend his voice in a scene in an upcoming episode where Adam, the main character, dreams of fighting Dark Helmet before promising to produce Spaceballs 2: “I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ‘80s movie as Dark Helmet,” Goldbergs creator Adam F Goldberg said.

“I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!”

It is reported that Goldberg “worked for several weeks” to get Moranis’ involvement due to his retirement.  The Spaceballs Episode of the Goldbergs airs on May 9th in the USA and a week or two later in the UK on E4.
