Yes! Jon Favreau begins production on a Mandalorian and Grogu movie this year!

Big Star Wars news day, folks!

Only yesterday I speculated that chief creative officer of Lucasfilm, Dave Filoni’s next project might be a Mandalorian movie in place of a fourth season (here) and today it’s happened!

Starting production later this year, The Mandalorian & Grogu – final title? – will see Iron Man director Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian too, pick up the reigns on a new Star Wars adventure starring everyone’s favorite franchise father and son… and yes, it’s looking like Pedro Pascal will be involved (here).

The movie will be written by Filoni and Favreau (here).

In a statement, Favreau said: “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy added: “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

This is the first Star Wars movie to go into production since 2019’s underwhelming The Rise of Skywalker and, out of the movies on the horizon, this is the one we here at FTN HQ are most excited for.

It will also be the first big project to kick off Filoni’s new leadership role at Lucasfilm, so it’ll be well scrutinised (like that happens with Star Wars much).

This sounds like a different project to Filoni’s Heir to the Empire movie which will wrap of the ‘Mandoverse’ of THe Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and the upcoming Skeleton Crew and, as of now, it’s unclear where exactly it will fit into the overall timeline.

Disney/Lucasfilm have currently three Star Wars movies penciled in for May 22nd, 2026, Dec. 18th, 2026 and Dec 17th, 2027, so our money is on it being the May 2026 movie but that’s just a guess right now.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
