Zach Creggar’s Weapons prequel about Aunt Gladys officially moving ahead

The breakout character of 2025, Aunt Gladys, played with creepy and sinister bravado by Amy Madigan in Zach Creggar’s superb horror Weapons, is officially coming back to our screens.

Back in August, Creggar told Variety that he had an idea for another movie in the Weapons world, saying: “I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I’d like to see it on the screen one day.”

Warner Bros and New Line were quick to get Creggar to move on the new movie, which tells the story of a young Aunt Gladys, with Creggar confirming in September that it was officially happening: “It’s real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bulls@£t.”

Creggar’s Resident Evil is currently filming. He previously said of the script: “It has nothing to do with any of the other Resident Evil movies. If I do my job, it will feel fresh, edgy, and weird.”

Creggar said that he had the idea of the prequel movie ready to go when he was making Weapons: “I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”

Aunt Gladys was a character that Creggar had in his head for a long time, saying that her creation was largely due to Wade Davis’ The Serpent and the Rainbow book (not Wes Craven’s movie) and, unexpectedly, the Mekons song Dancing in the Head (which you can listen to here): “That song is just an instruction manual on how to create a zombie.

“It’s no singing, it’s just someone explaining to you this ritual. I love it ’cause it’s a weird ritual where you soak a dollar bill in rum and set it on fire and arrange four mirrors for the four corners of the earth and get a shard of a human skull and all these things. I was like, ‘One day, I wanna make up my own crazy, evil recipe.’ This movie was my chance to do that.”

Speaking with Deadline, Creggar said that he was slightly worried that creating an Aunt Gladys prequel damage Weapons or ruin the character’s mystique but he sees her story as being worth the risk: “I think that the Gladys story is such an interesting story that I think it’s going to feel very separate and stand on its own two feet, and I don’t think it’s going to diminish Weapons.”

With the prequel well and truly underway, will we see Madigan as Gladys again? Madigan herself is keen but unsure, saying: “I’d love to live inside Zach’s brain again, but we’ll see if that happens.”

I loved Weapons and cannot wait to see more of Gladys’ story and I’m heartened to hear that Creggar had the idea in his head while he was making Weapons, so this isn’t just an unnecessary cash grab, and hopefully a movie that he really wants to make and that really stands alongside Weapons.

Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em.
