We have our first official look at Batman in the DCU and it’s pretty epic, if a little… vague.
In the latest episode of Creature Commandos, the first official installment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, we see the rise of Dr Phosporus and his first terrifying meeting with Gotham’s Guardian (above or if you want to watch the first appearance, you can watch it here.).
Yes, I know we briefly saw Batman – and other heroes – in Circe’s nightmare vision she shared with Amanda Waller, but this is the first time we’ve seen Batman in action and felt his presence and how that presence impacts others and as brief as it was, it was great!
WATCH: It’s finally here! The trailer for James Gunn’s Superman soars in!
Gunn, in a new interview, says he wasn’t ready to commit to Batman’s suit design in the episode: “When they first showed the episode to me, there was a lot more Batman. And I said, ‘I’m not ready to commit to that… more silhouette!’”
He explains why he’s holding off on Batman and wants to make sure he’s done right in the new universe: “He’s one of my favourite characters. I love him. And we’re gonna do great things with him. He’s the most popular superhero in the world.”
When asked which Batman this is, Gunn is clearly aware of the rumours of Robert Pattinson joining the DCU, and humorously replies that this is “the DCU Batman”.
Although he does say that at this stage Batman is already established in Gotham and has had an impact on this DCU world and we will not be seeing the origin story for the millionth time: “Just like [in] the Superman movie [where] we see that Superman already exists… he is already known by the people in Metropolis… We don’t need to hear the origin story again.”
The Batman II and Batman: The Brave and the Bold movies both pushed back
before teasing a Batman and Superman meeting onscreen in the future: “I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman. And together!”
I can’t help feeling that this meeting will be more World’s Finest and less Batman V Superman though.
As well as first look at Batman in the show, we also got to see Gotham and I have a few thoughts.
So, as I commented on above, there are currently a lot of rumours that Pattinson’s Batman may be coming over to the DCU and that Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe will no longer be standalone and, while I’m not saying it’s happening, a lot of what we’ve seen and heard today would possibly support that.
How? Well, we see Gotham (below) and it’s not the beautifully gothic, sweeping city of Tim Burton’s movies but rather a more realistic take on the city, similar to what Reeves is doing in his universe. Secondly, the fact that Gunn isn’t committing to Batman or, more accurately here, his appearance/outfit, would imply that maybe conversations are still ongoing and they’ve not decided on who will be Batman here; having the ears and cape almost entirely in silhouette means that the suit and actor can be confirmed later.
Anyway, that’s just my thoughts… I would like to see Pattinson’s Batman cross over, after all, it would also be less confusing for general audiences wondering why there are two Batman(s) on the big screen. But, hey, that’s just my thoughts, what are yours? Let me know, guys…
